Tithal Beach is a black sand beach on the Arabian Sea, about 4 km west of Valsad in South Gujarat. Entry is free, and visitors come for sunsets and temples.
This guide covers location, timings, things to do, food, swimming safety, the best time to visit and how to reach it. Moreover, it flags every figure where sources disagree.
Key Takeaways
- Tithal Beach sits about 4 to 6 km from Valsad, depending on the source.
- Entry is free. Water sports and rides cost extra, but prices are not published.
- Reviewers warn about strong currents and slippery rocks, so swimming is not advised.
- Sunset is the most recommended time, and Sundays and holidays get crowded.
- Authorities closed the beach as a precaution in May 2024, so check before a monsoon trip.
Where Is Tithal Beach?
Gujarat Tourism says Tithal Beach lies “4 kilometers to the west of Valsad town” along the Arabian Sea. It belongs to Valsad district in South Gujarat.
Other sources give slightly different figures. For example, Tripoto and TheIndia.co.in say about 5 to 6 km, and one guide quotes 6 km in its FAQ.
| Source | Distance from Valsad |
| Gujarat Tourism, Valsad district site | 4 km west of Valsad town |
| Tripoto | About 5 km |
| TheIndia.co.in | About 6 km |
| YourVacationTrip (FAQ) | Around 6 km |
We use the official 4 km figure, but road distance may be longer. Therefore, ask a local driver for the exact route.
Why Is Tithal Beach Black?
Gujarat Tourism calls the black sand “well-known”. It does not explain the cause, and the Wikipedia page for the beach gives no explanation either.
Tripoto attributes the colour to erosion of basalt rock. We could not confirm this from an official source, so treat it as a likely but unverified explanation.
Black sand also holds heat. Consequently, midday sand can feel hot underfoot, which is our general observation, not a sourced fact.
Some websites claim the sand has therapeutic benefits. We found no reliable source for this, so we do not repeat it.
Tithal Beach Timings, Entry Fee and Parking
Entry is free, according to YourVacationTrip and Tripoto. Gujarat Tourism lists visiting hours as “Morning to Evening” and does not name an entry fee.
Opening hours conflict between guides. Some say the beach is open 24 hours, while Tripoto’s tips section says 6 AM to 10 PM.
| Detail | What sources say |
| Entry fee | Free (YourVacationTrip, Tripoto) |
| Hours | Morning to evening (Gujarat Tourism), 24 hours (YourVacationTrip), 6 AM to 10 PM (Tripoto) |
| Parking | Available (one Tripadvisor review), no fee published |
| Activity prices | Not published by any source we found |
Sources report no entry ticket. However, stalls and rides charge their own rates. Therefore, ask the price before you start any activity.
Daylight hours are the safest choice. In particular, we advise leaving before dark, since lighting and security are not documented.
Things to Do at Tithal Beach
Most visitors come for a walk, the sunset and street food. Furthermore, the beach suits short family outings, since it takes only a few hours to see.
Walk the Sea Face
One 2019 Tripadvisor reviewer praised the beach’s high protection wall. A 2026 visitor found mornings lively, with joggers, cyclists and families on the sea front.
Walks work best early in the morning or near sunset. Meanwhile, midday heat can make the black sand uncomfortable, so plan around the sun.
Watch the Sunset
Sunset is the most frequently recommended time in reviews. Tripoto also calls it the best moment for photography, so bring a charged phone.
Arrive about an hour early to find a spot. Remember that Sundays and public holidays bring heavy crowds, according to Tripadvisor reviewers.
Try Beach Games and Rides
YourVacationTrip lists volleyball, frisbee, a Ferris wheel and bouncy castles. One Tripadvisor review also mentions ATV rides for children on the beach.
Availability changes from day to day. Moreover, we could not find official prices for any ride, so confirm the cost at each stall first.
Ask About Water Sports
Wikipedia says speed boats and jet skis started “recently” at the beach. Tripoto adds banana boats and parasailing to its list.
However, a 2021 Tripadvisor reviewer said the beach is not suitable for bathing or water sports. Therefore, confirm availability on the day.
Always follow the operator’s safety instructions. In addition, insist on a life jacket for any boat or water ride, and skip the activity if none is offered.
Skip Animal Rides
Tripoto lists camel and horse rides, but also advises against them for animal welfare reasons. Our view is simple: skip them.
This is our opinion, not an official rule. Children can enjoy the beach just as much without animal rides, and the animals are spared the heat.
Temples Near Tithal Beach
Two temples sit on either side of the beach. Gujarat Tourism says the Shri Sai Baba temple is 1.5 km south of the main beach.
It adds that the Shri Swaminarayan temple is 1.6 km north. Both temples overlook the Arabian Sea, so many visitors combine a short visit with the beach.
Tripoto describes the Swaminarayan temple as white marble and calls it BAPS Swaminarayan. It also mentions a Vishnu temple dated to the 12th century. We could not verify that date.
Tripadvisor reviewers mention a restaurant called Premvati at the Swaminarayan temple. Check the opening hours before you plan a meal there.
Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering. This is general temple etiquette, not a rule specific to Tithal, and local customs may vary by temple.
Food at Tithal Beach
Food stalls line the beach. Tripadvisor reviewers mention bhajiya, dabeli, bhel chaat, roasted corn, sugarcane juice and coconut water as the usual snacks.
YourVacationTrip adds pav bhaji and chana chaat. It also lists Gujarati dishes such as dhokla, khandvi and undhiyu, though availability varies by stall.
Prices are not published for any stall. Therefore, agree on the price first, and carry small cash notes for easy payment.
| Snack | Mentioned by |
| Bhajiya, dabeli, bhel chaat | Tripadvisor reviewers |
| Roasted corn, sugarcane juice, coconut water | Tripadvisor reviewers |
| Pav bhaji, chana chaat | YourVacationTrip |
Choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh in front of you. This is our general food advice, not a sourced recommendation.
Is Tithal Beach Safe for Swimming?
Swimming is not advised. Tripadvisor reviewers warn that the current is strong and that reaching the water means climbing slippery rocks.
YourVacationTrip adds that the water sits far from the beach area. It calls the beach unsuitable for senior citizens because of the distance to the water.
Tripoto says not to swim without a lifeguard or guide. We found no documented lifeguard service, so we treat the water as unsafe for swimming.
Keep children close, and stay off wet rocks. Moreover, do not enter the sea during high tide or strong winds.
Monsoon and Weather Closures
On May 31, 2024, Desh Gujarat reported that the Valsad district administration closed Tithal Beach as a precaution. Police were deployed to enforce the closure.
The report cited strong winds forecast by the India Meteorological Department and strong currents off South Gujarat. It gave no end date for the closure.
As a result, check local news before a monsoon or cyclone-season trip. In addition, Tripoto advises avoiding June to September because of high tides.
Rules to Follow
These basic rules come from Tripoto, and we agree with them:
- Do not litter.
- Do not drink alcohol or use drugs on the beach.
- Do not disturb wildlife or restricted areas.
- Do not enter temples without permission.
Best Time to Visit Tithal Beach
Guides disagree on the best months. Tripoto says October to March, while YourVacationTrip says November to February. The table below compares all three sources.
| Source | Best months |
| Tripoto | October to March |
| YourVacationTrip | November to February |
| TheIndia.co.in | January to March, October to December |
Overlap exists from November to February. Therefore, plan a trip in those months for the most comfortable weather and the lowest closure risk.
Tripoto gives temperature and rainfall figures without sources, so we do not repeat them. Meanwhile, the monsoon months carry closure risk.
Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, according to reviewers. Sunset draws the biggest crowd, so arrive early if you want space on the sand.
How to Reach Tithal Beach
Valsad is the nearest town, and the beach lies a short ride away. Gujarat Tourism lists road distances from major cities.
| From | Distance |
| Valsad station | About 5 km, roughly 12 minutes |
| Surat | 95 km by road |
| Mumbai | 196 km by road |
| Ahmedabad | 336 km by road |
The Surat figure varies between sources. Tripoto lists 108 km in one place and about 200 km in another, so we use the official 95 km.
By Road
The district site says regular buses run to Valsad from major cities. From Valsad, you can take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the beach.
The district site says the drive from Mumbai follows NH48. It lists Mumbai airport at about 186 km, which is slightly less than the road figure above.
By Train
Valsad has a major railway station with connections to many cities. Gujarat Tourism puts it about 5 km from the beach.
The district site also lists Atul as a nearby station. Most visitors will find Valsad more convenient, since it is the larger station.
By Air
There are no direct flights to Valsad. Surat Airport is the nearest, at about 93 km (Gujarat Tourism) or 99 km (district site).
Gujarat Tourism estimates about 2.5 hours by road from Surat Airport. Mumbai airport is another option, though it adds a much longer drive.

Where to Stay Near Tithal Beach
Stay options are mostly in Valsad town, not on the beach. Expedia lists several properties near Tithal, but it does not give distances.
| Property (as listed on Expedia) | Area |
| Unique Resort & Lifestyle | Bhagod, Valsad |
| Hotel Best Inn | Valsad |
| Hotel Grandeur | Bechar Road, Valsad |
| Hotel Royal Stay | Dharampur Chokdi, Valsad |
| Woods The Clubhouse, Mangalyam Meadows | Chanvai Rabda Road, Valsad |
We have not verified rates, ratings or distances for these hotels. Therefore, check recent reviews and map distances before you book anything.
Some visitors stay in Surat or Vapi and take a day trip. This suits a short visit, in our opinion.
Nearby Places to Visit
Gujarat Tourism lists three nearby attractions: Nargol Beach, Purna Wildlife Sanctuary and Padam Dungri Eco Tourism. It also names Shivrajpur, Suvali and Madhavpur beaches as related experiences.
YourVacationTrip suggests a Valsad day trip that includes the following nearby places and temples:
- Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple
- Parnera Hill
- Valsad Museum
- Maa Vishvambhari Tirthyatra Dham (about 18 km)
Some websites list Daman as a nearby attraction. Daman is a separate city, so plan it as its own trip.

Is Tithal Beach Worth Visiting?
Tithal Beach suits a short, low-cost outing. Visitors get black sand, sunset views, two temples and street food within a few hours.
It does not suit travellers who want clear water, swimming or quiet. In contrast, families and sunset lovers will likely enjoy it more.
| Pros | Cons |
| Free entry | Swimming not advised |
| Black sand and sunset views | Crowds on Sundays and holidays |
| Two temples nearby | Mixed cleanliness in reviews |
| Street food | Activity prices not published |
Tripadvisor reviews are mixed on cleanliness. Several call the beach clean, while a 2020 reviewer called it dirty. Most reviews date from 2018 to 2021.
Therefore, set your expectations for a local beach, not a resort shoreline. This is our reading of the reviews, not an official rating.
Facilities at Tithal Beach
Tripoto lists parking, toilets, changing rooms, showers and lockers. It also describes paths as wheelchair accessible, though it cites no official source.
We could not confirm these facilities with the district administration. Therefore, do not rely on them for medical or accessibility needs without checking.
One Tripadvisor review confirms parking is available. Peak days may fill the parking area quickly, so arrive early on weekends and public holidays.
Photography Tips for Tithal Beach
Photography is allowed and recommended, according to Tripoto. Sunset gives the strongest contrast against the black sand, and the temples add a useful backdrop.
These tips are our own suggestions:
- Shoot during the hour before sunset for soft light.
- Frame the temples or the sea wall for depth.
- Protect your phone or camera from sand and spray.
- Avoid wet rocks when you step back for a shot.
Moreover, ask permission before photographing strangers, and respect temple photography rules.
Planning Your Budget
No source publishes activity prices, so we cannot give a rupee figure. Entry is free, and food and rides are the main costs.
Build your budget in three steps. First, ask each stall for the price. Next, add transport from Valsad or Surat. Finally, add a buffer for parking or tips.
Therefore, a short visit can stay inexpensive. A longer trip costs more if you add hotels, taxis and restaurant meals along the way.
Tithal Beach Festival and Kite Festival
Wikipedia says the Tithal Beach Festival and the International Kite Festival are also held on the shore. It does not give dates.
We could not confirm current dates for either event. Therefore, check Gujarat Tourism or the district administration before you plan around them.
A Simple 3-Hour Plan
This plan is our own suggestion for a short visit to the area, not an official itinerary from any tourism body or local authority.
- Reach Valsad and continue to the beach by mid-afternoon.
- Walk the sea face and visit one of the two temples.
- Watch the sunset from a safe spot away from wet rocks.
- Eat at a busy stall and leave before dark.
Moreover, this plan fits a Surat or Valsad day trip. It also keeps you away from the sea at night.
Practical Tips for Visitors
These tips are our general advice, not official guidance:
- Carry water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
- Wear footwear that handles hot black sand.
- Keep valuables with you, since crowds build at sunset.
- Avoid weekends if you prefer calm.
- Check weather and local news before monsoon trips.
Finally, carry enough cash for the stalls and rides, since card acceptance is not documented in any source we found online.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Tithal Beach
Tithal Beach works well as a short, free outing for sunsets, temples and street food. Treat the sea with caution, and avoid swimming.
Always check local news and conditions before you travel. We will update this guide when official sources publish new timings or activity prices.
